Objective: This course is to develop and sharpen your critical thinking skills by practicing various debate techniques such as questioning, refuting, and cross-examining. Through the course, you will be able to verify the authenticity and identify fallacies in information and others' speeches. You will be able to think quicker and express strong opinions on various controversial topics. In the course, you will also be giving presentations about discourse skills and debate basics. We will practice these techniques through multiple exercise and under real-life contexts. Besides giving presentations, you will be taking listening quizzes to improve your English listening proficiency. Rules: If you should be absent from class, you must obtain an official leave of absence through Student's Leave Application System. You may take up to 3 leaves per semester. A leave after the third time will result in 2 points off the final grade. Attendance is mandatory. Your participation score is measured by participation in each class. Your participation points (before midterm) will be shown to you during midterm week. Those who engage in a big assignment can skip the quiz in the same week. If there is any assignment needed to be turned in, late submission will result in twenty percent off the grade of the homework. Four days after a deadline, another 20 percent off the grade. There will be 7 quizzes through the semester. You will listen to a speech and watch an online video before each quiz. For the quiz, you may bring your notes of the video to class, but you can't bring notes from the speech. Video hyperlink, speech audio files along with transcripts, are given on E3 already. Check your email regularly for announcements and assignments updated on E3. Please note that the course schedule and content are tentative. Changes might occur according to students’ learning needs. You are very welcome to talk to me regarding course/assignment suggestions or your personal needs. Private talks are irrelevant with your grades of the course.
Please purchase a textbook from Li-wen bookstore on campus.
