This graduate seminar, which is also open to undergraduates, is designed to provide an introduction to classic and contemporary texts in the field of transgender studies. The selected texts encompass a wide range of topics, including gender dysphoria, passing, inversion, transition and detransition, monstrosity and nonhuman transformation, as well as nonbinary/trans identification. Throughout the term, we will explore several key questions: What distinctions exist among terms like "transexual," "transgender," and "trans" (or "trans*")? What is lost when we see female inverts as prototypical lesbians or trans men? How do we approach trans people before the term "transgender" was coined? Is undergoing hormonal and surgical body modification a prerequisite for being considered trans? What does "nonbinary" mean now? What if trans experiences were reduced to a matter of identity and identification? What is at stake when trans people detransition? Why do many trans literary works prominently incorporate themes related to nature? We will orient ourselves with a couple of landmark essays before delving into several literary and cinematic texts.

Participation • While regular attendance is important, it is crucial to note that attending all classes alone will not guarantee full participation points. • Active engagement and meaningful contributions during class discussions are integral to your participation grade. If you rarely speak in class, your participation grade may be adversely affected. Individual Presentation • Every student is responsible for leading the discussion on one of the weekly readings. When it is your turn, please submit 3–5 questions or observations (including relevant quotations and page numbers in parentheses) on Dropbox by 6 PM on Mondays. • Other participants are encouraged to share their questions or observations online within the same deadlines. Response Papers, Final Papers, and Individual Meetings • Every student has to submit two short response papers online, each 500–600 words in length, double-spaced. • Your first response paper should focus on one of the primary texts before the midterm exam; your second response paper should focus on a primary text after the midterm exam. • While quoting critical essays is allowed, you should aim to analyze your chosen texts within the context of trans studies. • If you plan to submit a final paper (online), it should be 8–10 pages long and double-spaced. Your final paper should not simply expand upon your response paper; it should ideally offer a distinct perspective. • Individual meetings (20 minutes for each student) will be scheduled to assist with the final paper. During your meeting, you can ask questions about readings, your thesis or outline, and cited passages. Paper Formatting Use MLA style, 9th edition. Include your English and Chinese names, the instructor's name, course title, and the date (for example, 19 Sept. 2023) in the upper left corner of the first page. Center your paper's title. Midterm and Final Exams • Only undergraduates are eligible to take the exams. You will need to answer essay questions in person. • Undergraduates pursuing graduate studies are encouraged to submit a final paper. Graduate students are required to submit a final paper. Late Work Late submissions will not be accepted unless you are ill or face an emergency, and only a two-day extension is typically granted. Please adhere to deadlines. Final Scores You will receive notification when your final grade is available. If you have any questions about your grades, you have 24 hours to contact me. After this 24-hour period, your final grade will become official.
