This is a graduate-level introduction to study of language in its social context. The course will introduce basic sociolinguistic concepts in the context of second language acquisition, including classroom and uninstructed late language learning situations. Throughout the semester, we will focus on topics such as multilingual speech communities, social and regional variation, language identity, intercultural communication and language attitudes. We begin by examining the language variation on a societal level and then explore such variation on the individual level according to factors like age, gender, context, etc. By the end of the course, students will be familiar with various research traditions in sociolinguistics, especially as their methods apply to second language acquisition.
