This course aims to introduce graduate students to research methodology and thesis writing in the field of second language studies. The first part of the course will focus on topics related to conducting research, including the research questions, research validity and reliability, research designs, data collection methods, and interpretation of commonly reported statistical outcomes. The second part of the course will cover knowledge and skills required for thesis writing. Students will learn about the organization of a thesis, the relevant content presented in different sections of a thesis, and linguistic and presentational features of thesis writing. Throughout the course, students will achieve the following learning outcomes: 1. critically read and evaluate published research; 2. design their own research projects using appropriate methodology; 3. write a research proposal that adheres to academic writing conventions
