法蘭克福學派論電影、 現代性與大眾文化

This course introduces students to the theories of the Frankfurt School on cinema, modernity, and mass culture, with a primary focus on Siegfried Kracauer, Walter Benjamin, Theodore Adorno, Oskar Negt, and Alexander Kluge. We will also read the works of contemporary film and humanities theorists who are specialists in the Frankfurt School, including Miriam Hansen, Thomas Y Levin, and Andreas Huyssen. In addition to reading theory, we will discuss selected film texts so that students without prior training in film studies and media theory can better understand the role of cinema, media, and mass culture in the experience of modernity. 在當代電影與媒體理論裡,對法蘭克福學派的重讀扮演了關鍵性的角色。本課程向學生介紹法蘭克福學派對電影、媒體、現代性與大眾文化的思索。課程會特別聚焦班雅明、克拉考爾、阿多諾、内特與克魯格,也會閱讀與討論法蘭克福學派研究學者與專家對法蘭克福理論家的重讀與思考。 除了法蘭克福學派電影與媒體理論,我們也會以專業的電影與媒體研究者的角度精細閱讀與對話電影、媒體與錄像文本。在學期中,亦會有一個台灣國際女性影展週,一個策展人演講,以及全班一起去鳳甲美術館參與台灣國際錄像藝術展看展;策展人並且會特別為我們導覽及與我們對談。 透過理論、電影和媒體文本、策展實踐等的多面向對話,使得修課學生的思想受到刺激,深入思考法蘭克福學派理論在當代電影與媒體文化與環境裡的關鍵意義。

1. This course is taught primarily in English, yet students may speak and write in English or Chinese. 授課教師授課以英文為主,必要時提供中譯。修課學生可選擇以英文或中文參與討論和書寫作業。 2. No auditors, please. 本課要求修課學生積極參與課堂討論與思辨,故不接受旁聽。 3. Maximum enrollment limit: sixteen students. 修課上限16人。

As usual, we will use social media as our virtual class space. It is our intellectual and actual engagement in what is at stake in the contemporary media environment. For this semester, we will use Discord. 作為當代媒體與影像文化的積極實踐者,我們使用新型態社群媒體作為本課的課程討論與分享空間;本學期使用Discord.

This is a graduate seminar, meaning students are expected to be active participants in the class. 1. In-class presentation and discussion: 20% Students should take turns to present their reading of assigned materials each week. Those not presenting should also read the materials in advance and participate in class discussions. Please post your notes of weekly readings on *Discord*. For the weeks when we have screenings, students should also take notes while watching films and share their notes on Discord. * Those absent from class more than three times without a good reason will get a “zero” grade for this item. 2. In-class presentation of final project: 20% Each student will present a talk on their final project at the end of the semester. 3. Term-Paper or Project: 40 % *Students who take this course have two options to pursue their final projects: 4.1) For students who want to write a term paper: Please write a paper of 20 pages. For undergraduate students: 12-14 pages. *Note: workload reduced for this semester. Option A) Please use the theories we learned in class to analyze your selection of film, moving-image arts, or any art texts or media texts. Option B) You may also use films, moving-image works, or other forms of artwork to complicate or problematize theory in your paper. Option C) For emerging theorists: You may write an analytical essay on *theory*. Please select two or three theoretical texts we read in class, provide detailed textual analysis, and compare them. Please stick to the texts when you analyze those texts. 4.2) For students who have a background in art-making or media production: Option A) You may make a video essay or an essay film, design a computer game, or make an artwork of any form; it should be related to topics we discuss in class. Option B) You may produce an artistic discourse for your work of art, your media project, or the art or media festival you curate Please discuss your project with me in advance and obtain my permission if you opt for 4.2. 修課學生可選擇寫期末論文或是以影像作品、媒體作品、策展、遊戲設計等創作與策展形式完成期末計畫,惟需先與授課教師討論並取得同意。
