Surface science is the study of physical and chemical phenomena occurring at material interfaces, including solid–solid, solid–liquid, solid–gas, solid–vacuums, and liquid–gas interfaces. The fields of surface chemistry and surface physics are also under this subject. Some related practical applications are classified as surface engineering, including heterogeneous catalysis, semiconductor device fabrication, self-assembled monolayers, and adhesives. Interfacial chemistry and physics are common subjects for both surface science and engineering. Previously, their knowledge was built upon the interfaces of bulk materials and colloids. When the material dimensions are reduced from 3-dimensional (3D) to 2-dimensional (2D), much of our understanding built upon the materials with a 3D volume will change because 2D materials only have a surface. In this course, first, we will go over the fundamentals of surface science and engineering and learn the general physics and chemistry from various material interfaces. Next, we will continue to learn about materials that only have surface – two-dimensional materials (2DM), such as transition metal dichalcogenides, graphene, monolayer metals, and Mxenes, to name a few. They interface with other materials via only “weak” van der Waals forces. Still, they can create attractive properties at their interfaces where different physical properties are coupled. The lectures will introduce 2DM basic properties, some of their interesting physics and material chemistry, fabrication methods, and applications in next-generation devices, energy missions, and anti-oxidation. I will also cover some characterization techniques frequently used on material surfaces and interfaces and the fundamentals of these techniques. Toward the end of this course, you will be asked to propose a topic relevant to our lectures and 2DM for an oral presentation. You will also learn how to turn your idea/hypothesis into a proposal for fund/fellowship applications.
The knowledge of the following subjects can be helpful but is optional for taking this course: Introduction to Materials Science and Engineering; General Physics and Chemistry; Thermodynamics; Electronic Materials.
• This course will be taught in English. • The lecture materials will have more concepts and fundamental interpretation than mathematical equations. • The course quiz may be based on the reading assignments and the lecture materials taught in the week before. • The oral presentation project will train and exercise your abilities to make a decent presentation and deliver it to your audience clearly.
• Course quiz (on Mon) and attendance (on Wed): 50% • Oral presentation project (not necessarily in Mandarin): 30% • Final Exam: 20% • (Bonus) Attending my office hours or schedule office hours with me for questions/discussions: extra 5%
