In this course, students will explore the theories and doctrines that underlie the law of property and will learn how to apply them in practical contexts. Topics covered will include: estates and future interests, land use, real estate transactions, leasing, mortgages, easements, and zoning. Students will engage in an analysis of case law, statutes, and regulations governing property rights and transactions. Through this course, students will gain the capability to: • Understand and articulate the basic concepts and principles of property law. • Apply property law theories and principles to analyze real-world situations. • Understand how property law intersects with issues of social and economic policy. • Develop a basic understanding of the legal processes related to property acquisition, transfer, and land use. • Critically analyze case law, statutes, and regulations related to property law.
This course is conducted in English, so proficiency in English is required.
Thorough preparation, timely arrival, regular attendance, active participation, a supportive attitude toward your classmates, and timely completion of all assignments are expected. In the classroom I use a combination of an interactive lecture-discussion method, so you may be called on. Please review the Classroom Preparedness and Participation rubric for information regarding how your participation and preparedness will be graded.
Assignment Grading Classroom Preparedness and Participation (including two quizzes) 20% of final grade Final Exam 80% of final grade (January 12, 2024)
