The course will be taught online, with the last two weeks held in person. Since the course is taught in English, students are expected to have a basic level of proficiency in English. The course is taught by James Lin, a US lawyer with extensive experience in human rights and international law. Professor Lin will teach with a combination of lecturing and socratic conversational methods, with a focus on the human rights issues arising from the development of modern technology. The course will cover the international human rights mechanism and explore human rights problems in the technology industry, as well as high-profile cases involving transnational technology enterprises. During the classes, students will have the opportunity to engage in interactive activities and group discussion to deepen their understanding of the course material. In the last two weeks, students are required to present a case study in person. Upon completion of this course, students will have a better understanding of the complex relationship between human rights and modern technology. They will be able to identify and analyze human rights issues in the tech industry, and understand how the international and domestic human rights mechanisms operate to address these issues. This course is designed to provide students with an introductory understanding of international standards applicable to the Corporate Responsibility to protect and respect international human rights and remedy violations. Students who participate actively will: (1) acquire substantive knowledge about the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (Ruggie Principles), which establish standards for corporations to prevent and address negative impacts on human rights linked to business activity; and (2) gain practical insight into the business and human rights issues and impacts of technology industry. Each class will be based on real-world case studies from Asia and worldwide.
