Students who embody a wide vocabulary are believed to function well in normal English scenarios, and tend to succeed academically and professionally. The aim of the course is to develop students’ vocabulary in terms of range, accurate usage, spelling and pronunciation. The course will present students alternative strategies to understand and use accurate words and word phrases in different venues. Reading is undoubtedly the most effective tool to attain this goal. Theme-based reading materials are provided every week to systematically increase word knowledge, and to ensure the vocabulary presented in this course to be contextual and meaningful. Word study activities including definitions, synonyms and antonyms, completing the sentence, writing, vocabulary in the context, etc. will provide multiple and varied exposure to the taught words. Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of this course, students should: 1. Understand the meaning of a wide range of vocabulary in language comprehension. 2. Be able to use words in a fluent and accurate way in language production. 3. Have developed vocabulary building skills that they can employ independently beyond classroom. 4. Have expanded their vocabulary that can be commensurate with the level needed for further studies or future employment.

In order to assess students’ subsequent writing, every officially-enrolled student must complete the pre-writing session in the first week. Late work is not accepted without prior arrangement, and a penalty will be imposed, i.e. every assignment loses 10% of that assignment per day when it is late including weekends.
