This course aims to increase learners' competence and awareness in reading English, and by integrating reading strategies, to build their paragraph writing skills and ultimately progress to the ability of writing academic essays. To fulfill this goal, learners are about to read and analyze a variety of texts with a critical perspective, reinforce the reading contents through paraphrasing and summarizing the information, and expressing opinions by writing well-structured paragraphs. A focus on language forms will also be provided to ensure a clear and lucid delivery of thoughts. Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of this course, learners are expected to: 1. read with a large degree of independence 2. understand, synthesize and evaluate the information in a wide range of lengthy, complex texts with a critical perspective (e.g. distinguishing facts and opinions, recognizing bias, etc.) 3. summarize and paraphrase information from the source materials 4. build academic paragraph writing skills in an organized manners and with support of evidence and examples, and ultimately progress to write a five-paragraph academic essay.

1. You are expected to carefully read and understand the information contained in this syllabus. This is like a rulebook and will contain what is required for successful completion of this class. 2. In order to assess students’ subsequent writing, every officially-enrolled student must complete the pre-writing session in the first week. If you have not signed up for this course in the first week and have missed the session, please come to me in person and make up for the pre-writing. 3. You always need to preview lessons before class every week. Come prepared for the best learning outcome. Pop quizzes may be expected. 4. Come to class regularly. It is the students’responsibility to find out what you have missed if absent. Absence is not an excuse for now knowing what has been announced in class or the deadline of an assignment. I recommend that you exchange your contact number with at least one of the classmates, or establish any reliable way to communicate with your classmate(s) for the problem. 5. Late work is not accepted without prior arrangement, and a penalty will be imposed, i.e. every assignment loses 10% of that assignment per day when it is late including weekends. Late assignments are not accepted via email submission. I also understand there are emergencies, so please communicate with me. 6. This syllabus is subject to change. The teacher reserves the right to make adjustments for pending tasks in response to learners' needs.
Course Requirements and Evaluation: 1. Attendance and participation 10% This category includes students’ attendance, and oral participation as they engage in various learning tasks in class. Attend all class sessions on time. Orally participate in class to earn points for yourselves; no free point! 2. Reading and writing practices 20% (1) Independently read text articles as scheduled, and complete exercises. (2) Participate in learning tasks and activities (e.g. pair/group writing, presentation, peers' review, etc.) that happen in class. Pop quizzes might be expected. (3) Take-home worksheet 3. Writing assignments 30% Writing assignments include (1) paragraph writing (multiple drafts; 175-200 words) (2) summary writing (3) essay outlines. 4. Mid-term exam 20% The written exam will test you on three units (U1, U2, U3). The test sections include vocabulary, reading skills and comprehension, writing skills, and text comprehension. 5. Final exam 20% The final exam will test you on another three units (U4, U5, U7). The test sections include vocabulary, reading skills and comprehension, writing skills, and text comprehension.
