This course will discuss a period of British art history that has not received direct scholarly attention: eighteenth-century Scottish painting. In the vast majority of art history writing, this period of Scottish art history has often been written within, between, or even under the history of British art. It has therefore been isolated in a more marginal position and given less attention. However, this course seeks to clearly present its specificity, value and influence on future generations. As the background of eighteenth-century Scottish painting is closely related to the Scottish Enlightenment, the teacher will first guide students to understand the background and ideological characteristics of the Scottish Enlightenment and then discuss the characteristics of its aesthetic thought and representative thinkers, such as Francis Hutcheson (1694-1746) and David Hume (1711-1717). This course will also provide an overview of eighteenth-century Scottish art history by analyzing the better-known eighteenth-century Scottish painters, such as Allan Ramsay (1713-1784), Jacob More (1740-1793), Henry Raeburn (1756-1823), David Wilkie (1785-1841), and Edwin Landseer (1802-1873).
