Advancing English is designed to equip students with the English language skills necessary to undertake their future coursework in English. Through engagement with a variety of current- events topics and related exercises in listening, speaking, reading, grammar and vocabulary, students will not only become more fluent and accurate in their oral and written English communication, but also learn strategies for becoming active readers and listeners.

Students enrolled in this course should be high-intermediate learners of English. Advancing English focuses on topics relevant to students’ lives and integrates as many authentic texts as possible into the syllabus (audio, visual and print). At the same time, it provides enough scaffolding in vocabulary and grammar for students to fully integrate and actively discuss those topics. Activities are designed to create authentic opportunities for interaction and communication in the classroom.
