概述

Electromagnetism is one of the core courses for the Department of Photonics. In the second semester, Electromagnetism (II) will more or less cover the material in the textbook after chapter 7, including review of Maxwell's equations and vector analysis, conservation laws, electromagnetic waves, potentials and fields, and radiation (and transmission lines if possible). These topics will mature students and provide background knowledges for their advanced courses and research in the future. Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. Recognize applications of electromagnetic waves in our daily lives. 2. Describe the fundamental theory of electrodynamics; 3. Explain functions of electromagnetic waves interacting with matters or devices; 4. Apply mathematical and physical tools to solve electromagnetic problems; Learning activities in this course include: 1. Direct instruction (with slides and blackboard, and teaching aids if necessary); 2. Homework (~10 times); 3. Oral presentation in recitation; 4. Quizzes and exams.

Calculus, Physics, and Electromagnetism (I)

教學方式

Teaching with slides and board. Lecture slides mainly follow the material in textbook and cover some from references. Attendance in person is encouraged if possible. Your questions about the material are the most important thing for you to bring to the lectures, and you are encouraged to ask them as they occur to you. Problem sets (homework) submission are due on the due date before class. Late submissions will be deducted 50% of the grade. The graded problem sets will be returned to you after the recitation. The lecture slides will be posted on e3. The information of homework, recitation, and solution will be posted on Padlet. You are encouraged to work together with your peers on the problem sets (however all final written work must be your own). You and your group members will have oral presentation (about homework problems) in the recitation and discussion with TA.
