Purpose and Course Outline This course introduces project management as a new profession. This course focuses on how to use basic quantitative methods and organizational theories to achieve project management goals. Traditional practical issues related to a typical engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) project — including bidding, contract terms and conditions, subcontracting, contract management, quality management, and insurance and bonding — are not covered in this course. More advanced courses are available in the graduate school to learn these practical issues. Outline This course is organized in ten lectures: 1. Introduction 2. Strategic management and project selection 3. Project planning: system development tools and techniques 4. Project scheduling: critical path method 5. Project scheduling: PERT 6. Cost-loaded schedule and its applications 7. Estimating project costs 8. Path constraint and resource allocation 9. Managing resource constraints and critical chain 10. Project controls: earned-value management and other techniques 11. Project-based organizations: Structures and behavior
