概述

The Interpretation of Dreams (1900) is arguably the most significant work ever written by Sigmund Freud, the founder of psychoanalysis, who once acknowledges that “insight such as this [that he puts into the book] falls to one’s lot but once in a lifetime.” As his psychoanalytic theory evolves, so do his views on dreams. When Melanie Klein comes along, picking up the threads Freud left behind, the understanding of dreams is refined even further. Wilfred R. Bion, a Klein’s follower, happens to be the most recent clinician to overhaul the theory of dreams. Beyond the Kleinian school, D. W. Winnicott and Jacques Lacan are two other giant figures to have reached an insight on dreams of their own. This class will make a historical survey of the dream theory from Freud up to the contemporary psychoanalysts like Mauro Mancia and Christopher Bollas, and the philosopher Jonathan Lear, as well as Hanna Segal, a Kleinian analyst, all of whom form together an intense and lively debate. Students will be required to read the weekly assigned materials and write an online response. A term paper of 5 to 7 pages in length in English is required by the end of the semester. Students shall decide on what to write by the midterm that takes the form of a one-on-one interview with the instructor. All reading and writing assignments will be conducted in English, whereas class discussions might proceed bilingually.
