概述

A corpus is a collection of pieces of language text in electronic form, selected according to external criteria to represent a language or language variety as a source of data for linguistic research (Sinclair, 2005). Corpora can help EFL students become independent and autonomous language learners. In recent years, corpus-based learning has been applied in various areas of language teaching and learning, including reading, writing, grammar and vocabulary learning, listening comprehension, cultural learning, etc. This course is designed for graduate students in TESOL and applied linguistics as well as language teachers who may wish to learn more about how to implement corpus activities in the EFL classroom. It also guides students to conduct research in corpus-based language teaching and its many relevant applications such as self-created corpora, corpus tools, online databases, and frequency-based data from analyses of corpora. Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to: 1. Understand the theoretical foundations, uses, and principles of corpora in EFL contexts. 2. Analyze the current developments and challenges regarding corpus-based language teaching and learning. 3. Evaluate corpus applications for use in their own language classrooms and research. 4. Adapt existing corpus resources to suit the needs of their learners and research. 5. Understand the strategies to integrate corpora into EFL learning environments. 6. Design and develop appropriate curriculum in which EFL learners interact and negotiate meaning with the assistance of corpora.
