概述

This course is intended for students interested in the pedagogical implications of the globalization of English and will help future teachers consider ways to incorporate a Global Englishes perspective into their classrooms. English has become a global language, used by diverse speakers from various linguistic and cultural backgrounds. “Non-native” English speakers outnumber “native” English speakers, and “non-native” English teachers outnumber “native” English teachers. Many of these “non-native” speakers and teachers are successful communicators and teachers around the globe. However, in English language teaching (ELT) a monolingual myth prevails, and native speakers continue to be perceived as the “standard”. The 21st century field of TESOL has witnessed an emerging paradigmatic shift across various fields within the umbrella term of Global Englishes, including World Englishes (WE), English as a Lingua Franca (ELF), and translanguaging and plurilingualism. In this course we will examine, learn about, and reflect on the theoretical and applied interests in the global spread of English. Topics that we will cover include the various approaches to Global Englishes, as well as language attitude, language ideology, native-speakerism, racism, and some of the debates that have taken place around these themes. We will explore these topics in various contexts of ELT, including EFL/ESL, bilingual education and CLIL, English-medium instruction, foreign-local teacher co-teaching, and online ELT platforms in the gig economy. At the end of this course, students will • develop critical perspectives towards globalization, global spread of English, and their implications for ELT • be familiar with some of the main trends in the Global Englishes research • be able to critically analyze English and ELT related materials and policiees from a Global Englishes perspective • plan and implement instruction that develops English learners’ awareness of Global Englishes and enhances their confidence in communicating in English.
