This course covers a shorter and more focused period of time than the history of empire or imperialism in the ordinary sense. In short, the course is designed to focus on imperial discourse from the period between the two wars of the last century to the present, which is also regarded as an inflexion point in imperial discourse, that is, the moment when "empire" most closely meets, intersects with, and is indistinguishable from, the modern nation-state and modernity. In addition to discussing the demise of the British Empire, Soviet Social Imperialism, and American Imperialism, which still haunts the public discourse, the course will also look at contemporary East Asia, discussing the imperial discourses surrounding Japan, Korea, Taiwan, and China, as well as the traces, memories, and legacies left behind. The course aims to provide graduate students with a broad historical overview of contemporary East Asia, and to bring to light the multiple power relations that "empire" implies in contemporary society. At the same time, apart from examining the various discourses of empire, the course will also draw on a variety of unique experiences, with the aim of enabling students to move beyond an arbitrary, monolithic, and overly schematic imagination and understanding, and to take account of the discourses, legacies, and experiences of empire in the context of their own time and space. Each student is required to select a specific article, make 1-2 presentations, and submit a final paper. The final paper requires students to re-examine a particular discourse of empire in the light of a historical experience (either from the literature, from an existing academic paper, or from their own research).
