Spectroscopy, the measurement of the interaction between light and matter, has played an essential role in wild applications in our daily lives. Advances in this field have contributed to the development of lasers, gas sensing, single-molecule sensors, telescopes for exoplanet discovery, medical devices, etc. Further, taking advantage of newly developed photonics, some modern methods of optical spectroscopy have led to major breakthroughs in atmospheric science, remote sensing, instrument miniaturization, and Mars explorations. In each topic of this course, besides theoretical concepts and experimental techniques, we will also discuss interesting applications. At the end of this course, students will be expected to have a basic knowledge of this field, ideas about how most spectroscopy instruments work, and knowledge of how to read a paper. Also, I hope this class will bring together students from a variety of interests or probably different backgrounds, and we will practice communicating across disciplines based on our understanding of optical spectroscopy.
It would be helpful with a background in lasers, optics, and atomic/molecular physics, but not necessary.
