This course presents the foundations of group theory and gives its applications to various fields of chemistry. The main stress is put on understanding the mathematical structure of group theory apparatus and on equipping the students with the ability of solving real-life problems using group theoretical tools. The most important part of this course is the theory of symmetry-adapted molecular orbitals (MOs) and normal vibrations of molecules. The course will give also a brief introduction to the symmetry of 3D crystals.
general chemistry, interest in math
