This course aims to advance students’ academic listening and speaking skills. Students will further develop listening skills (e.g., identifying main ideas, details, making inferences, and note-taking) through less simplified and authentic listening materials. Students will also develop discussion and presentation skills through interactive activities. By the end of the course, students will learn to: 1 comprehend listening materials which cover more specialized or sophisticated topics 2 identify and analyze points of view, arguments, or implicit information in the listening material 3 take notes and speak from notes 4 synthesize information and orally summarize or present key points 5 lead and participate in effective group discussions 6 deliver well-structured oral presentations using effective visual aids 7 ask and respond to questions

Assignments 16% There will be a total of 8 assignments. Students are expected to complete the assignment before attending each class. The assignment will help students preview the course content and effectively participate in group discussion during the class. Each assignment will include (1) working on selected textbook exercises and (2) watching required online videos, and (3) responding to questions. Assignments will be available on New E3 one week before each class and will be submitted on New E3. Points will be taken off for late assignments. Attendance and Class Participation 24% Students will engage in group discussion on topics related to the textbook materials and work on the assigned task together. You are expected to actively participate in group discussion and each person will take on a role during discussion. Your group will give a short presentation for the assigned task. Regardless of excused or unexcused absences, specific grading policy will be provided in class. Midterm exam & Final exam 40% Midterm and final exams will cover skills practiced in class or in assignments. Both listening and speaking skills will be assessed in the exams. Therefore, your regular preparation for the course and active participation in class activities can help you effectively prepare for the exams. Individual Presentation 20% Each student will give one formal presentation on any topics related to the textbook materials. The presentation will be followed by a Q & A session. Therefore, you will also practice asking questions or responding to questions during formal presentations. Specific guidelines will be given in class.
