Welcome to PTCP30009 (formally IPO5001) W678-CM215, the elective one-semester, 2-credit-hour and 3-contact- hour-per-week course, Technical Writing in English, for photonics graduate students. The main purpose of this course is to develop essential English writing skills for graduate students in order to be able to complete writing assignments in English. Students will be encouraged to write in English with a variety of types and topics. Take-home assignments will be required for students to practice their writing skills. They will also be invited to participate in group discussions, thereby learning to improve technical essay writing through group efforts. Overall, the students enrolled in this class are expected to gain the ability of critical thinking, logic reasoning and organization and to develop fundamental skills toward successful academic writing in English.

The course consists of 12 three-hour lectures, four out-of-class assignments (A), three quizzes (Q), one midterm exam (M), and one final exam (F). Each exam lasting 110 minutes will cover the material discussed during the weeks since the previous exam. (This means that the final exam is not comprehensive.) Both of the exams will be closed-book and closed-notes. No make-up exams will be given! Details about other matters such as the change of the tentatively scheduled lecture will be given in class at the appropriate time. You are responsible for being present and understanding that information.
Assignments: 40%; Quizzes: 15%; Midterm: 20%; Final Exam: 25% All home-work assignments are graded in accordance with the following ranks: A+ (95), A (90), A- (87), B+ (83), B (80), B- (77), C+ (73), C (70), C- (67), D (60).
