This course discusses the past and on-going engineering and research topics on thin film coatings, mainly on their processing and the use of those thin films by engineers and scientists who are looking to improve the properties and biological responses of the material-host interface. Thin films, in essence, are becoming more widely researched and used as an alternative to traditional sprayed coatings because they have a more uniform structure and therefore greater stability. The course starts with a comprehensive description to vacuum science and technologies, then to various thin film coatings processing. Finally, the course is focused on thin films’ applications, particularly in the biomedical field. The fundamentals of thin films for biomedical application, and the properties of thin films will be covered. Bio-functional thin films and their usage in biomedical applications will be emphasized. In sum, this course is intended to make students understand: 1. The fundamental theories of vacuum science and technologies. 2. The fundamental theories of thin film processing. 3. Thin film and surface physics as well as chemistry. 4. The applications of thin film in biomedical engineering. 5. Various applications in industries. 6. Development and recent progress of thin film processes.
