Recent advances in artificial intelligence, such as large language models like ChatGPT, are both highlighting the relevance of philosophical discussions of AI that have been going on for a long time, and raising new philosophical and ethical issues, which are now the object of global attention. Such issues include the prospect of mentality and consciousness in AI systems, existential risk and the regulation of AI research, the risk of AI-enabled political manipulation by malicious actors, and a loss of meaning in human life as intelligent machines take over an increasing number of tasks. This seminar will offer students the opportunity to explore the latest discussions in the field, and to interact with leading experts, based both in Taiwan and abroad. Through these interactions, students will gain a deeper understanding of the relevant issues, as well as the chance to articulate and refine their personal views on such critical issues of our time.
Basic competence in English & Philosophy
The course will be taught in hybrid mode.
