Among various experiences we go through, pain is unique and significant in our lives. Its presence is not only annoying but can also disturb our daily activities. It seems to be located in a specific part of our body, but it is closely connected to our brain processes. Its experience has many different forms, making it challenging to imagine types of pain one has never experienced (e.g., labor pain), yet when we are in pain, we seem to just know it. At times, pain can be so vivid in memory or imagination, yet at times we don’t seem to remember and fail to learn from our painful past. What is pain? How do philosophers and neuroscientists understand pain? This course aims at exploring topics surrounding pain. Topics we will explore include: – What is the concept of pain? How should we define pain? – Is there a distinction between the appearance and reality of pain? – What are philosophical and neuroscientific theories of pain? – Can we remember or imagine pain? Can we experience another’s pain? By examining the philosophical and neuroscientific literature on pain, students will familiarize themselves with these issues and develop the ability to analyze and be critical to philosophical arguments.
