Course Description Consciousness studies have been a growing research field over the past three decades, integrating the philosophy of mind and cognitive neuroscience to understand human experience. What is consciousness? What characteristics does consciousness have? How does consciousness arise? What is the function of consciousness? How is consciousness related to other cognitive functions? What are the various forms of conscious experiences? This course aims to address these questions and enable students to familiarize themselves with these issues and the current landscape of consciousness studies. Course Objectives - Understand the scope and methodologies in consciousness studies. - Become familiar with the core issues and engage with the latest debates in consciousness studies. - Acquire sufficient background knowledge and conceptual tools in the philosophy and science of consciousness to engage with relevant studies.
Teaching Format: Mixture synchronous distance learning (lecturing in a classroom and simultaneously broadcasting to online students) Using Google Classroom as the teaching platform This class will not be recorded through Google Meet due to our university's recent change of Cloud storage policy.
In-Class Paper-and-Pencil Multiple Choices Final Exam 100% (The exam questions will be based on in-class contents and discussions) All students have to take the final exam in person on Yangming campus in Week 16 (including the students from Chiaotung campus). Failure to do so will result in failing the course. If you cannot take the final exam in person in Week 16, you are advised to apply auditing the course rather than taking the course for credit since this will result in failing the course. In-Person or Online Attendance Policy Yangming campus students: Required to attend in-person every session, unless students have a compelling excuse to attend online and get the instructor’s permission in advance (at least 1 hours in advance). Failing to obtain the instructor's permission in advance will count as an absence for the week. Every student can apply to attend online in advance three times at most. Chiaotung campus and auditing students: Can attend online or in person. All students have to apply for excused absence through NYCU’s 學生請假系統, failing to do so in advance (at least 1 hour in advance) will count as unexcused absences. Gading Policy for excused or unexcused absence, late to class or leaving class early From Week 3 to Week 16, if you have six excused or unexcused absences throughout the semester, you will receive a failing grade for the course. Four or five excused or unexcused absences will receive a grade penalty for the final grade. From Week 3 to Week 16, if you are late to class for more than 15 minutes for more than 12 times or leave the class early for more than 12 times, you will receive a failing grade for the course; less than 12 times will also receive a grade penalty for the final grade. Students who fail to comply with the above attendance and grading policy will receive a grade penalty or fail the course as specified. If you cannot follow the above policy, you are advised to apply for auditing the course or not take the course.
