Course Description The goal of this course is to enable students to translate philosophical and theoretical perspectives into good research methodologies. It critically raises questions about the choice, role and value of quantitative methodology and the manner in which this influences data collection, analysis, interpretation and writing up. Research designs and related statistical analyses are explored with respect to their appropriateness for addressing disciplinary problems. The specific models introduced will be chosen based on students’ research topics. Course Objectives At the completion of this course, the students will be able to: 1. Critically assess the methods of data collection in quantitative research; 2. Achieve advanced understanding of various research designs and data collection approaches, 3. Examine the various uses of quantitative data 4. Apply this knowledge in the formulation of a research question and research proposal.

Lecture, seminar, and discussion

Participation: 15% Oral presentation: 25% Proposal: 60% This will involve: 1. presentation of the background, gaps and research questions being addressed; 2. choice of method and analytic approach, including assumptions & analysis 3. presentation of literature findings & discussion of expected research implications.
