Augustine asks, "What then is time?" and says, "If no one asks me, I know: if I wish to explain it to one that asketh, I know not." This cross-disciplinary course introduces various notions of time including that theorized in quantum physics, represented and imagined in literary texts, discussed and explored in philosophy, and employed and examined in cinema. Instead of answering the question “what is time,” this course shows approaches to this question and hopes to inspire the students to answer it themselves. By exposing them to these cultural texts on “time,” students will learn to use critical thinking tools and literary and cinematic devices to appreciate Augustine’s “negative realization” - to understand that one does not understand – which is the origin of liberal studies. Both the skills acquired and the understanding itself belong to the core education of citizens in a democratic society and liberal human beings in a globalized world.

Students are expected to have finished the required texts (films, literary texts, or articles) before class. Full participation in presentation and discussion are expected. Required films could be found in the library. Reading materials will be provided on E3, the digital teaching platform. Teaching Assistant to be confirmed.
1. Presentation 20% -- 10-minute presentation (group or individual, depending on the total number of enrolled students) 2. Mid-term examination 30% -- Mid-term examination or mid-term essay 3. Final essay 40% --Language requirement: 全英文或全中文; word limits: 800-1000 English words, or 1600-2000 Chinese words. Depending on the number of enrolments, co-written essay (3-4 students per group, 1000-1200 English words or 2000-2400 Chinese words) will be considered. Essay topics will be given in lectures. Please note that plagiarism is a serious academic offence.
