This course will offer an overview of ethical and social issues raised by advances in Artificial Intelligence (AI). After clarifying key notions like intelligence and AI, and delving into the foundations of AI Ethics by reviewing the main contemporary ethical theories, we will consider whether and how the many benefits that AI has to offer society can be promoted without generating unacceptable costs, within the field of medicine as well as other contexts. We will discuss contemporary issues like hi-tech surveillance, data privacy, technological unemployment, the obsolescence of various human skills, and the rise of generative AI (from large language models like ChatGPT to “deepfakes”). We will also address the problem of AI bias, and the impact (positive or negative) of AI on the environment, as well as issues raised by both upcoming and more speculative AI-related developments, such as self-driving cars; increasingly realistic virtual reality; humanoid robots and “human-like” chatbots; the possibility of conscious machines; and ultimately, the prospect of creating machines more intelligent than humans, and what our response to that hypothetical prospect should be.
Basic competence in English No prior philosophical training is presupposed
As long as students from both the Yang Ming & Chiao Tung campuses of NYCU are registered, the course will be offered in hybrid mode, i.e. both taught in person and streamed via Google Meet. Otherwise, it will be offered in person only. Learning outcomes: students are expected to 1. Acquire knowledge of the main issues pertaining to the philosophy and ethics of AI. 2. Improve their ability to articulate and defend a philosophical position of their own, in relation to some of the topics covered in the course.
The assessment scheme for this course will involve three main components: 1) Class participation: attendance (12%), completion of required readings & participation in discussion (18%); = 30% of the overall grade; 2) Written assignment and oral presentation: working on their own or in pairs, students will produce a written assignment of 1,500 to 2,000 words long (20%) and make an oral presentation in class (15%) on their chosen topic from the syllabus; = 35% of the overall grade; 3) Final exam: 2-hour open book exam, to be taken in class; = 35% of the overall grade.
