Course Description Defined by Bruce Sterling as “the deliberate use of diegetic prototypes to suspend disbelief about change,” speculative design has become a powerful tool for exploring aspects of contemporary social, cultural, political and ethical life. Through techniques borrowed from literature and cinema, through practices of estrangement and defamiliarization, and through a set of carefully chosen design methods, participants in this class will learn how to use design fiction to create new directions for the future. This course focuses on the history and theory of speculative design with special attention to its relationship to critical making. The course includes case studies profiling the work of some of the most provocative theorists and creators of design fiction, as well as hands-on lab time devoted to developing skills in creating physical prototypes and shaping effective design fiction videos. This course explores the intersection of design, technology, and society through a speculative lens. It is designed for students who may not have a background in design. Through a lens from Human- Computer Interaction (HCI) , user experience and critical design, this course will combine hands-on projects, HCI readings and discussion for students to develop their ability to think critically about technology and its impact on society, and create speculative design videos, storyboards, and design fictions. The course will also cover research through design and provide insights and exercise from HCI perspective Learning Objectives Speculative Design integrates theory and practice; students should be prepared to read and discuss actively in class, and to develop skills necessary for completing the assignments. Specifically, students will engage in collaboration, video capture, video editing, user interface design, or object design. to help participants identify, understand and use specific speculative design methodologies to query forms of provocation and speculation and their relationship to contemporary social, cultural, political, and ethical life to develop skills across diverse media in critical making and design fiction Demonstrate an understanding of speculative design and its relevance to technology and society. Analyze and critically evaluate the social and ethical implications of emerging technologies. Apply HCI methodologies to imagine and prototype speculative design concepts. Conduct research through design to explore speculative design ideas. Integrate human-computer interaction knowledge into speculative design projects. Create engaging and visually compelling speculative design videos, storyboards, or design fiction. Articulate and communicate their design concepts effectively, both orally and in written form. Collaborate effectively in interdisciplinary teams to develop speculative design projects. Reflect on the implications of speculative design and technology in relation to UX Course Objectives: By the end of the course, students will be able to: Demonstrate an understanding of speculative design and its relevance to technology and society. Analyze and critically evaluate the social and ethical implications of emerging technologies. Apply HCI methodologies to imagine and prototype speculative design concepts. Conduct research through design to explore speculative design ideas. Integrate human-computer interaction knowledge into speculative design projects. Create engaging and visually compelling speculative design videos, storyboards, or design fictions. Articulate and communicate their design concepts effectively, both orally and in written form. Collaborate effectively in interdisciplinary teams to develop speculative design projects. Reflect on the implications of speculative design and technology in relation to UX.
It may be helpful that you have taken courses such as User Experience Design/Research, Human-Computer Interaction, Interaction Design, Science and Technology classes, or other design-related courses. But you will enjoy this class no matter what! All disciplinaries are welcomed and encouraged!
