概述

Media psychology is a dynamic and interdisciplinary field that can be applied to a wide range of topics. This course delves into the socio-psychological issues surrounding various forms of information and communication technologies, including entertainment media, extended reality, and artificial intelligence, with a focus on their potential impacts and applications on our cognitive, behavioral, psychological, and social dimensions of life. This course will provide diverse perspectives to help students analyze the interaction between humans and media technologies and the resulting socio-psychological consequences. The primary goal of this course is for you to get a comprehensive understanding of the field. By the end of the course, students will be able to: ‐ Grasp the complex interactions between media and individuals, and their effects on human cognition, emotions, behaviors, and well-being. ‐ Critically analyze and interpret how scholars frame research issues and investigate the effects of media on human beings. ‐ Build logical and precise arguments to advance knowledge in the field. By the end of the semester, students will submit a research proposal with a formal APA-style format, including all necessary sections except for the Results and Discussion. The proposal should demonstrate a clear understanding of the field and present a well-designed study. My hope is that students will conduct their proposed study within a year and complete the remaining sections based on their data analyses.

評分方式

1. Discussion leading (35%): The course will follow a seminar format, with students taking turns each week to lead discussions. Discussion leaders are expected to: 1) Read the required readings in greater depth, provide an overview of the material in class, and facilitate discussions on the key concepts and arguments presented in the literature. Innovative observations and unique perspectives on theories and arguments in the literature are especially encouraged. 2) Respond to the questions raised by classmates on E3 that week and extend the discussion. 3) Present at least one observation of media usage phenomena or trends related to the week's topic, perhaps even counter-examples from outside the texts, and lead the class discussion on it. 4) Additionally, it is encouraged to read and share insights from additional papers or literature on related topics. For example, if the assigned reading for the week is a theoretical study, you may share empirical studies that validate (either support or refute) the argument. A presentation with slides is preferred. 2. E-learning platform participation and In-class participation (30%): Students who are not leading the discussion are also required to read the weekly reading material. Prior to each week's class (by Tuesday midnight), those students must post at least one discussion question on E3 that addresses the week's reading material or share observations on relevant media usage phenomena. Please pose thought-provoking and discussion-worthy questions, avoiding questions that can be answered by reading the article or questions that are not relevant to the topic of the week. (Late submissions will incur a penalty of 5 points per day.) Responding to your classmates' questions or observations on E3 will earn you extra points! Class participation is based on your ongoing contributions to each class meeting. You are expected to make multiple, substantive contributions during each class session. Both the quality and quantity of your discussions and questions will be evaluated. During the final presentation, non-presenters will be expected to take on the role of commentators, providing comments or asking questions, and their contributions will also be evaluated. 3. Research proposal (35%): Students are required to present and submit an original research proposal at the final session of the class. The topic should be relevant to the class. You may choose to complete the term project individually or in groups of up to two people. By week 11 (by 11/11 at 9:00 PM), students will submit an outline of their research proposal. The course session that week will provide consultation on each group's proposal. (Late submissions will incur a penalty of 5 points per day.) The grade of the research proposal will be based on the quality of the presentation (10%) and the manuscript (25%). The paper is expected to be of publishable quality, starting with a synthesis of relevant theory and research, and concluding with testable hypotheses, a well-designed research methodology, and a comprehensive list of references. The paper should follow the APA 7th edition style guidelines, be approximately 10-15 pages in length, double-spaced, 12-point type, and carefully edited for clarity, conciseness, and grammatical accuracy. -Academic Integrity- You are required to fully understand and abide by the rules of academic ethics, avoiding plagiarism and research misconduct. It is my responsibility to report all violations of academic integrity to the related university officials. Please refer to Taiwan Academic Ethics Education Resource Center (https://ethics.moe.edu.tw/). Any serious violation or pattern of violations of academic integrity might result in the student's expulsion from the School.
