This course aims to enhance students’knowledge of English history and literature from the Anglo-Saxon period to the early eighteenth century. The reading list covers a variety of texts from different literary genres to familiarize students with the major literary conventions and their functions, and to increase students' understanding of the social, historical, cultural, and religious background of the medieval England in which these texts were produced. * * Students are required to respect the class and class rules. * Students are required to read the texts discussed in advance, come to class with sufficient knowledge of them, and participate in class actively. * The syllabus uploaded here is a tentative one, subject to changes depending on real class progress. A hard copy of the finalized syllabus will be provided in the first class.
Students who wish to take this course must first complete all of the three Literature courses listed below: Freshman English (I): Introduction to Literature Introduction to Western Literature (I) Introduction to Western Literature (II)
Attendance, Participation & Respect for the class 50% Midterm exam 25% Final exam 25% * The instructor reserves right to change the syllabus and the grading policies of this course. * No late assignments will be accepted. No make-up quizzes and exams will be given.

The Norton Anthology of English Literature, 10/e edition. Package 1. Older or the latest editions are acceptable, but students must take FULL responsibility for finding all texts, lines, and paragraphs in their own edition, whether read or discussed in class or outside of it
