Objective: This course is to develop and sharpen your critical thinking skills by practicing various debate techniques such as questioning, refuting, and cross-examining. Through the course, you will be able to verify the authenticity and identify fallacies in information and others' speeches. You will be able to think quicker and express strong opinions on various controversial topics. In the course, you will also be giving presentations about discourse skills and debate basics. We will practice these techniques through multiple exercise and under real-life contexts.
Please purchase a textbook from Li-wen bookstore on campus.
◦ Class participation 25%: opinion sharing, feedback on presentations, question answering, feedback form on the movie ◦ Assignment 35%: Presentation, impromptu debate 1, impromptu debate 2 ◦ Midterm 20%: mini debate ◦ Final 20%: debate ◦ All announcements and assignments will be posted in google classroom. Attendance: ◦ If you should be absent from class, you must obtain an official leave through Students' Leave Application System. You may take up to 3 leaves per semester. Every leave after the third time will result in 2 points off the final grade. ◦ If you do not obtain an official leave, each absence will result in 2 points off the final grade. ◦ I will do a roll call each class. If you are late, each time will result in 0.5 point off the final grade. Showing up 20 minutes after a class starts is considered absence. ◦ If you disappear during the class, such as taking a long break for more than 20 minutes, you are considered absent. Participation: ◦ Participation takes 25% of your final grade. Speak up as much as you can in each class. Look at what consists of the grading of participation. ◦ Each time you speak up in class, 1 to 2 points will be added to your participation score. ◦ The first-half-of-semester participation score will be shown to you during midterm. Delay of assignment: ◦ Each delay of the assignment will result in 20% off the assignment. Four days after the deadline will result in another 20% off. ◦ If you don't show up on your presentation, the assignment will be graded 0. Grading of presentations: ◦ Group presentations mean each member in the same group gets the same score in the assignment. Please note that the course schedule and content are tentative. Changes might occur according to students' learning needs. You are very welcome to talk to me regarding course assignments or suggestions. Private talks are irrelevant to your grading.
