概述

課程概述與目標: This course aims to build skills for engaging in meaningful and effective debate. In this class, PowerPoints will not be allowed. Students must communicate clearly using their voices alone. Debaters and adjudicators will build skills in asking questions properly, making suggestions, offering opinions, and agreeing or disagreeing politely.

先修科目

This course focuses on debates within a weekly format that enables all students to actively engage in the practice of debate each class session. Students will form teams to debate pro and con positions on issues they choose. Students are encouraged to tackle difficult issues that matter to us collectively, yet are murky and worthy of further exploration as a community. Students not engaged in a given session will be required to serve as adjudicators and judge the debates by filling out forms and orally presenting their assessments.

教學方式

Students will form teams and choose a topic and opposing sides to debate. Each week (from week two) the class will engage in debates and discussion on difficult issues facing us. Each class begins with students choosing and formulating their topic and preparing their arguments. There are two sets of debates, with four groups in total. Each set includes one group arguing for a position, another group will argue against this position. There will be minimal lecturing on issues in debate, though running commentary and advice may be anticipated from the instructor.

評分方式

Grading is based on your daily participation; no make-up work is accepted. Students who fail to attend class may makeup their lost points by participating in a debate (which the student must find independently, provide evidence for their participation and results. No exceptions. This course depends on daily engagement of the entire class. Performance as debater: 50% Performance as adjudicators: 50% In addition, absences are penalized by an extra 2 points being deducted from final grades.
