In this course we will study four of the major authors in nineteenth-century British women’s tradition of the novel, including Jane Austen, Mary Shelley, Charlotte and Emily Brönte. Four of their novels will be closely read in terms of their social and historical contexts. We will focus especially on issues such as gender, class, colonialism and scientism as represented in these novels. Additionally, we will explore film adaptations and variations of these works to enrich our understanding of their enduring impact and interpretation in contemporary media
