The misanthrope in you wonders why your life is in a constant state of apocalypse now! You want to know why you always have to fight harder to break the ceiling (with your mom) because you are not a cis straight man; you ask why as a woman you always get complimented “cute” but not “powerful”; and you question exactly how the basic binary gender system is not good enough for your fluid choices. Is it because you are a woman, an immigrant, a bisexual, working-class, transgender, or just simply a human? Is this what you were taught to dislike about yourself? The Otaku Life you live seems to not be the answer to everything. Single since mother’s womb, you continue to stumble upon social occasions that involve girls and not just with your bros. Your masculine role models have always been the limited father figures surrounding your immediate home and school circles, yet no one ever taught or explained to you why you are expected to perform emotional understanding while not being allowed to have any for yourself. Why is it so hard to be a “good boy?” This course plunges students immediately into content and ideas of Intersectional Feminism; the type of Feminism that literally applies to everyone, in front of the sunset on human civilizations (our warring, post-pandemic, and global-warming background.) This course takes an international approach and samples practices and discourses from literature, contemporary art, pop culture, social media, and critical studies. Topics included but are not limited to: goth, cyberfeminism, sexy cyborgs, avatar, cosplay, and furry will be discussed. Course work will vary but typically includes moderate reading assignments, listening and viewing, avid participation in class discussions, one creative/curatorial project OR one research presentation, and the determination to survive our apocalyptic world together. All are welcomed (seriously), but those who are suffering and seeking personal answers should receive priority boarding.
