概述

This course is designed to help non-English major students develop English sentence structure and paragraph-level academic writing skills. A variety of rhetorical skills and grammatical supports is presented while all reading passages, exercises, and writing tasks feature current and general academic topics. The teacher's instruction includes familiarizing students with sentence structures, paragraph organizations, and evaluating their writings. The students need to practice the rhetorical skills, analyze the sample readings, and are encouraged to communicate their ideas in group brainstorming. The assignments help them master the essential grammar necessary for well-formed sentences and for specific paragraph organizations. Each student is recommended to book at least ONE online writing consultation at NYCU Self-study Center of LTRC. For detail, please refer to the Self-study Center at Library 3F. 1. Handouts and online discussion platform: NYCU New E3 platform 2. Your active participation and performance in class will add to your grade. 3. Attend the class ON TIME. Being late for more than thirty minutes is regarded as being absent for that hour. If you are absent due to uncontrollable situations, such as acute/severe illness, emergency, important occasions, etc., please email the instructor for leave and provide the valid proof within 2 weeks. The medication receipt with correct stamp of date by accredited hospitals can be seen as a valid proof. If you are absent for more than 3 lessons without advance notice, you will fail the course. Absence from a class is no excuse for not knowing the assignment and what has been discussed in class. It is the student's responsibility to ask the classmates or the instructor what has been covered in the class. 4. If you are caught cheating or plagiarizing on the assignments/exams, you will fail the exam and even the course. 5. There will be no make-up exam unless you have valid and official reasons for absence in advance. No late work (unless you have requested an extension and been given approval ahead of the deadline) 6. Online tools Webex: In case of some emergencies, all students have the responsibility to be able to get online smoothly with both microphone and webcam working. You will get attendance points ONLY if you have all equipment ready. If you come online but with no mic or no webcam, you will NOT get the attendance score for that day. Google drive: You are expected to have a google drive and webex account. Almost all worksheets, homework, quizzes, and tests are online and require an account. If you don’t have those accounts set up yet, please do this for homework.
