The purpose of this course is to help graduate students write clearer and better-organized research documents for professional settings. Guided by the IMRaD format and supported by corpus technology, the course will focus on the information conventions and language conventions of the major sections of a research paper, including Introduction [with Literature Review] (I), Method and Materials (M), Results and Discussion (RaD), and Abstract. The information provided in this course is relevant to writing journal articles, conference papers, master's theses, dissertations, and research proposals. We will also discuss aspects of research paper publication, such as planning your publication, editing a research manuscript, avoiding plagiarism, responding to reviewers, and using technology to support your research paper writing. By the end of the course, students can expect to be able to: 1. Become familiar with the content and organization of a research paper. 2. Understand the vocabulary and grammar features of empirical research paper writing. 3. Be familiar with major considerations in academic writing, including audience, purpose, style, flow, and presentation. 4. Read critically and analyze a variety of research documents. 5. Understand and practice the skills needed to write a research paper, including planning, drafting, revising, and editing. 6. Be familiar with major aspects of scientific writing from writing and submission to publishing.

(1) Attendance and Participation (40%): To succeed in this course, regular attendance is required. You are expected to participate actively in class discussions and activities. As the semester progresses, you will find specific guidelines on the university's E3 website to complete your assignments and classroom activities, and you will be expected to follow the format and style guidelines required by each assignment. (2) Reading and Analysis Projects (30%): You will read and analyze the research papers of your collection with knowledge and skills learned from the course. Detailed guidelines will be provided. (3) Writing Project (30%): You will write the Introduction part of your research. Detailed instructions will be provided as the semester progresses.
