The class makes a brief introduction to the film noirs made during the 1940s, before it zeroes in on those that came along in the 1970s and after known as neo-noir films. This film type, grafted on the thriller film to become its bitterer and more cynical offshoot, at times misogynic, offers a rare opportunity to inquire how social-political forces and an art form can so intensely interact with each other. The social change in the U.S. will be taken as the case in point. Among the festering issues that plague America today include the Watergate (Chinatown), the Vietnam War (Taxi Driver), 9/11 (The Dark Knight), Hollywood's broken dreams (Mulholland Drive), and the global financial crisis (Gone Girl), as well as greed (Fargo), class (Match Point), marriage (Eyes Wide Shut), deception (Body Heat), ambition (Heat), and the threat from AI (Blade Runner). Students will be required to watch and discuss a film in class weekly. For the final project (5 pages in length), each student shall choose to write in English either a screenplay or a term paper. He or she shall decide which track to follow by the midterm that takes the form of a one-on-one interview with the instructor. Other requirements include (1) film logs, (2) online responses, and (3) a presentation on filmmakers. All lectures, assignments, and class discussion will be conducted in English.
