概述

This course explores the relationship between art and literature in an age when literature itself is being challenged as the preferred medium of presentation and communication of critical thought and inspirational ideas guiding societal well-being. Literature and philosophy have been in some respects eclipsed by the emergence of new and traditional technologies in the visual and other arts offering extra-textual means of engaging issues facing individuals, societies, and other species of life. These forms of media include videos on YouTube, podcasts, museum and installation art, T-shirts and consumer items featuring art and texts, performance art, film genres, and conceptual art (which can take any form, often encapsulated by short texts). While poets are inspired by paintings and monuments, artists use textual elements such as titles to provoke and challenge established ways of thinking, often shocking viewers. Through a selection of artworks ranging from modern to contemporary, students will examine the diverse ways in which language is integrated into visual compositions. Drawing from various artistic movements and mediums, this course aims to deepen students' understanding of the interplay between visual and textual elements in art. Implied idiomatic expressions and concepts specific to a local language as they appear in creative works are within the purview of the course. Students are encouraged to engage in research in any linguistic and artistic milieu, going beyond the starting point of this seminar. Moreover, nontraditional video essay or hybrid presentations are encouraged. Objectives of this course include rethinking genres and mediums in light of how cross-medium references invoke contemporary problems often while indexing historical intertexts from any mediums of artistic creativity (including literature, painting, sculpture, film, and music). The course aims to engage artistic mediums so as to foreground the growing dominance of the digital, the relation of texts to art projects and art to textual, intertextual, intermedia, and intercultural creative production today.
