Languages can be divided into wh-movement languages and wh-in-situ languages. Each type of language has its own way to interpret wh-phrases. Although most wh-phrases appear in question sentences, it does not mean that wh-phrases can only be interpreted interrogatively. This course aims to reveal the mechanism that manipulates the interpretation of wh-phrases. We will discuss where interrogative wh-phrases get interpreted in wh-movement and wh-in-situ languages, and focus on why certain wh-phrases have indefinite or even negative interpretations. In addition to paying attention to wh-phrases that serve as arguments, we will also look at the behavior of adjunct wh-phrases.
