This course introduces students to the history and aesthetics of documentary and the essay film. We will read history and theory texts and watch film texts so that students who do not have training in film studies can fully comprehend the aesthetic and political issues at stake for filmmakers and theorists. We will also have one to three class sessions where scholars, curators, or filmmakers will share their works with us. Updated in August: Professor Feng-Mei Heberer, Department of Cinema Studies at New York University, will give a talk on October 3rd. Artist and curator Tzan Wu will give a talk on his video artwork on December 5th. Students who take this course may write a term paper or make a documentary, an essay film, or an experimental film/video as their final project for the class. 本課程聚焦紀錄片與論文電影之歷史、美學與政治。課程閱讀文獻除了包括紀錄片與論文電影之歷史與理論文本,亦包括紀錄影像與論文電影文本──後者對於無電影史與電影研究基礎與訓練之學生,尤其重要。除了讀書,我們也會在授課教師的帶領下以電影學者的眼光分析與觀看部分紀錄電影與論文電影經典;如此沒有電影研究基礎的學生才能學會如何真正的觀看與分析電影。 除了課程要求閱讀的書與文章之外,我們也會有2─3個禮拜會有學者、策展人或電影創作者來與我們分享他們的研究、策展工作、或作品及創作理念。目前已確認的有紐約大學電影系教授Feng-Mei Heberer老師在10月3日的演講,以及藝術家與策展人吳梓安在12月5日的演講。
