概述

In this course, we will go though the basic knowledge and skills to work with soft matter. The 1st part introduces the material, including thermotropic liquid crystal, lyotropic liquid crystal, colloids, and elastomer. We will introduce phase transitions, and demonstrate how to identify the phases and microstucture under microscopes. The electrical, mechanical, and optical properties of the soft matter will be discussed, especially, how the structure of the molecule determines the physical properties. The 2nd part is propagation of light in birefringent material. The birefringence leads to ordinary and extraordinary modes of light propagation, and switches the polarization state of light. The theory will be derived. Students will learn how birefringence colors show the orientation of molecules (which is the essential idea of polarized optical microscopy) by doing the art & craft exercise. The 3nd part is about the four typical liquid crystal operation modes, which are In-Plane-Switching (IPS), Vertically Aligned (VA), Electrically Controlled Birefringence (ECB), and Twisted Nematic (TN). We will analyze the cell structure, the materials, the assembly, the operation, and their characteristic properties. 在本課程中,我們會介紹軟物質基本的物理性質,還有如何操作軟物質。 第一部分介紹材料:熱致型液晶、溶致型液晶、膠體、和彈性體。我們會介紹物質的相與相變,以及如何用顯微鏡辨識液晶相。我們會討論軟物質的電子、機械、光學性質,以及分子結構如何決定物理性質。 第二部份探討光如何在雙折射物質中傳播。光在雙折射物質中會分解成尋常光與非尋常光,兩種傳播模式的相位差可以用來切換光的偏極態。課程中會推導理論。課程中會帶學生做美勞,體驗如何用雙折射色判斷分子指向(偏光顯微術的基本原理)。 第三部分介紹四種典型的液晶(向列型物質)的操作模式,分別是水平操作模式(IPS)、垂直操作模式(VA)、電控雙折射模式(ECB)和扭轉操作模式(TN)。我們將分析元件的結構、材料、如何組裝、如何操作及其特性。
