What is it like to be a scientist at a university? What is it like to work in a company with a science background? What other science research is there? How can I decide where I should go next and what options are open to me? Never before have the career paths for scientists been so diverse and broad. As graduates from our school, students have options ranging from careers in academia, to finance, to healthcare, to semi-conductor physics and policy making. The increased application of data science methods, like AI, in society has further increased the opportunities. However, despite this wealth of options, students often don't know what paths are open to them and what it is like to work in a science related job. In this seminar we will learn about possible careers in science first hand from those that are working in them. We will learn about the experiences of PhD students across all disciplines of science and also graduates working in non-academic fields or as professors. Through studying the state-of-the-art literature we will also learn about what the boundaries of science today really are and get a panoramic view of what it is like to work as a scientist. In this seminar each week we will discuss the personal biography of a scientist as presented in Science magazine. Through presentations given by the course members and interactive discussions we will learn about their motivations and choices as they progress in their chosen career. Furthermore we will discuss one article of the same magazine chosen by the presenting student on a frontier topic that they find interesting and will try to understand the basic scientific principles of this research. The aim is to acquire a more rounded and broad view of science as a career and field.

In this seminar each week students will prepare a presentation on one edition of Science magazine supplied by the lecturer. In addition they will be part of and guide a discussion on the material presented.
