This course delves into the fundamental aspects of how businesses effectively manage operations across borders. The key objectives of this course are as follows: 1. To gain a comprehensive understanding of the structural and intrinsic elements associated with the strategic, organizational, and operational challenges that executives encounter when overseeing business activities in multiple countries. 2. To explore the dynamic interrelationships between businesses, the countries in which they conduct operations, and the competitive landscapes they navigate. 3. To equip students with the skills necessary for developing global strategies and proficiently managing operations across international borders.
This course is exclusively for GMBA students. However, we will allow a limited number of international master's exchange students to enroll, provided they attend classes during the first week. If you are interested in enrolling, please bring a hard copy of your registration sheet to the classroom. Bachelor's students and those who do not attend the first week of classes will not be eligible to register for this course.
*The course schedule may be subject to change.
1. Homework and Assignments: Several study groups will be formed. Members in each study group will work together to complete the final project, which will be comprised of an in-class presentation. Each group will choose a company from the following lists: (1) The Global Climate Tech Unicorns (https://www.holoniq.com/climatetech-unicorns) or (2) The 20 Surging Climate Tech Startups (2023) (https://explodingtopics.com/blog/climate-tech-startups). Then choose a target country for the company to do business there, and use DIGEST analysis to assess opportunities (and risks) in that country. Findings will be presented in class. More details of the final project will be announced in class later. Please submit your PPT file to the instructing professor via email before the final exam. 2. Exams and Quizzes: Mid-term and final exam. 3. Evaluation and Grading Policy: Mid-term exam: 30%; Final exam: 30%; Class participation: 10%; Group in-class presentation: 30% 4. Pedagogy and other supplementary information: (1) Class participation is required and will be graded. (2) Regular attendance is essential in this class. It is the students’ responsibility to request permission for the absence prior to the class. Absence without a proper reason will never be accepted. Attendance will be noted; students who miss 3 and more classes without prior permission will be failed. (Sick leaves are legitimate.) (3) Students who cheat will be failed. Plagiarism is considered cheating. (4) We will have mid-term and final exams. In addition, a final group project is required. Each group will present in the class and submit a written report together. (One report for each group.) (5) Talking and sleeping in the class are strictly prohibited. (6) Eating and drinking are fine in my class. If you did not have time for breakfast, bring it to the classroom to eat—your health is the most important. (7) Please turn off your cell phone during classes. Cell phone ringing in class will seriously affect your final grading.
