Traffic flow theories seek to describe in a precise mathematical way the interactions between the vehicles and their operations and the infrastructure. These theories are an indispensable construct for all models and tools that are being used in the design and operation of streets and highways. The objectives of this course are to introduce the fundamental concepts of a traffic system, characteristics of traffic, models of traffic flow, and their applications. Students will also be equipped with the ability to analyze traffic flow data for model calibration and development. After completing the course, students will be able to: (1) explain traffic phenomenon with macroscopic and microscopic traffic characteristics (2) describe traffic theory principles and statistical models (3) analyze traffic data for from traffic sensors traffic flow analysis and applications (4) apply microscopic traffic simulation models and software (5) recognize the future technologies and their role in the road traffic system
