Participate: Learning is a social act and can be best achieved within a community of learners (this class) through engaging, collaborative, and participatory class discussions. Each student is expected to engage in the assigned readings carefully, actively, and critically and come prepared to be an active participant of class discussions. Your individual contributions and serious participation in class activities benefit the entire community of learners (the class). Be an independent learner: You and you alone are responsible for your learning (not the instructor), and you also have an impact on the learning of others. Just going through the motions of completing course assignments at the bare minimum level of effort is not the type of academic work that earns a good grade. Points will be deducted off late work. If you feel you might have difficulty turning in any assignments, please contact me as soon as possible before the due date. Cheating, plagiarizing, and photocopying textbooks are NOT tolerated and will result in the failure of the course. Attend all classes: Attendance will be taken in every class and the class does not allow any excused absences unrelated to covid. That means not coming to class even with a legitimate reason or excuse will result in NO attendance and participation marks unless you have official documents related to covid from the government. Having said that, students do not need to email the teacher with an excuse since no points will be granted for not showing up to class. Take this course only if you are sure that you can dedicate time to come to class. Covid related absentee: Please email me with official documents (yellow card+quarantine paper) and apply for a formal absentee through the school system. Online tools Some classes are scheduled to be online via Webex. Please ensure that you can get online smoothly with both microphone and webcam working. You will get attendance points ONLY if you have all equipment ready. If you come online but with no mic or no webcam, you will NOT get the attendance score for that day. You are expected to have a google drive and webex account. Almost all worksheets, homework, quizzes, and tests are online and require an account. If you don’t have those accounts set up yet, please do this for homework. Writing assignment formats: Google docs: Open restriction as “anyone with a link can edit”. Font: Times New Roman 12pts Heading: Include your full name, ID number, course number, assignment date Assignment title: Skip one line, and then center your title. 評分方式

Attendance 10% Our class meets only once a week. The types and content of the activities and discussions that take place in the classroom cannot be accessed outside of class; attendance is essential. Participation 15% This part includes in class group work, in individual work, and homework. Resume 10% You will write 1 draft before submitting the final draft. The first draft will be reviewed by your peers. The final draft will be reviewed by me with comments and suggestions. Formal Self introduction 15% You will prepare a written script for a formal 1 minute self introduction (about 1 paragraph). Then during a designated time slot, you will share your formal self introduction in front of the entire class. The following is the distribution of score: 5% is the script which will be graded by the teacher 10% is your presentation performance graded by all classmates (average of everyone’s score) Cover Letter 10% You will write 1 draft before submitting the final draft. The first draft will be reviewed by your peers. The final draft will be reviewed by me with comments and suggestions. Emails 10% You will write 1 draft for 3 different types of emails. Midterm 20% This is an e-exam testing content from the grammar book. Application ePortfolio 10% All students are required to send in a real application to a company or school of your choice. You can do this at any point of the class, but I suggest you apply early or you won’t have enough time to finish the reflection assessment. During week 18, students will turn in an e- portfolio (1 pdf file) reflecting your experience of the application process and results. This should include 2 parts: The first section should include evidence of the application to a real company or school and all FINAL documents that you sent in. The second part should be reflections. Possible topics could include writing about your growth and learning, why you succeeded or not, future changes etc... There is no limit in word count; it will be assessed on quality over quantity.
