概述

The philosophy of Zhuangzi and Xunzi is a crucial contribution to both the Daoist and Confucian traditions in particular, and to the Chinese intellectual tradition as a whole. Zhuangzi has been considered not merely as one of the two main founders of Daoist philosophy, bringing about no less impacts than Laozi on the shaping of the Chinese intellectual tradition, but also as bearing some intimate and substantial root to Confucian philosophy, as some of the prominent scholars such as Wang, Fu-Zi and Yang, Rur-Bing have conceived of it. Xunzi, though highly critical of Zhuangzi, has absorbed and transformed much of Zhuangzi’s philosophical nuances, leading to some of the most sophisticated and original philosophical thinking in the Confucian tradition, whose legacy has not yet been fully excavated and brought to light up to the present day. Our focus in this seminar is hence on exposing the depth of these two philosophers whose inquiry into topics of the Way, politics, ethics, understanding, practical agency, and transformation, some of the cornerstones in the pre-Qin period. The purpose of this course is two-fold: one is to go deeply into the philosophy of both Zhuangzi and Xunzi through a rational reconstruction of the original texts within a framework of analytic philosophy and moral psychology; another is to demonstrate the significance and relevance of these two philosophers’ works in a contemporary context. By the end of the semester, students will be expected to critically appreciate the contemporary significance of the philosophy of Zhuangzi and Xunzi, and to conduct a research project of their own. This seminar will be co-taught by Professors Kai-Yuan Cheng (NYCU) and Ellie Wang (NCCU), and the meeting places will alternate between these two campuses, with the first half of the semester meeting at NCCU and the second half at NYCU. Physical attendance is required for students who enroll in this seminar. The teaching and discussion of this seminar will be conducted in English.
