This course will examine the development and evolution of British portraiture from the sixteenth century onwards by analysing well-known and representative portraits of British monarchs and statesmen. Through these artworks, we will explore how artists used their brushes to portray the rulers’ elaborate façades and the symbolic significance of these images as expressions of power. The course will primarily focus on six monarchs: Henry VIII, Elizabeth I, Queen Anne, Prince Charlie, George III, and Queen Victoria. Additionally, students will be introduced to the institutions and locations associated with the collection of British royal portraits, such as the Royal Museums Greenwich, the Royal Collection Trust, and the National Portrait Gallery.
