Over a century in which film has established itself as an art form, the role played by the screenplays is yet to win a full recognition. In fact many of the film auteurs are equally first-rate scriptwriters, such as Orson Welles, Woody Allen, and Quentin Tarantino, whose screenplays we will read in the class. Aside from watching the films based on them, we will also read the scripts that get made into the works which speak the culture of their respective time, such as An Affair to Remember (1957), Chinatown (1974), Good Will Hunting (1997), Capote (2005), and The End of the Tour (2015). They cover almost every decade after the postwar years, ranging from Hollywood mainstream to the Indie strain. The genres involved are equally diverse: romantic comedy, melodrama, film noir, bio-pic, and those that are hard to categorize. Together the screenplays selected form for us a big picture of that huge mosaic known otherwise as the American life. Students will be required to watch a film every two weeks in class, come back to discuss its screenplay in the subsequent week. For the term project (5 to 7 pages in length), each student shall choose to write in English either a screenplay or a final paper by the end of the semester. He or she shall decide which track to follow by the midterm that takes the form of a one-on-one interview with the instructor. Other requirements include (1) film logs, (2) online responses, and (3) screenplay quizzes, all held bi-weekly, whose further details shall be disclosed in class. All lectures, assignments, and class discussion will be conducted in English.
The class will be conducted entirely in English.
